People use the words asphalt and bitumen as if they mean the same thing, but they do not. The difference is simple once you know it, and it matters when you are deciding how to surface a driveway, road or car park. Here is the plain version.
What each one is
Bitumen is the sticky black binder, a heavy product of crude oil, that holds a road surface together. Asphalt is a mix of sand, aggregate and bitumen, where the bitumen is the glue binding the stone into a solid surface. So asphalt is the finished mix; bitumen is one ingredient of it.
You can also seal a surface with bitumen on its own. A layer of bitumen is sprayed down and covered with aggregate, and the process can be repeated for a two-coat seal. That is what most people mean by a bitumen driveway.
How they compare
Durability. Asphalt is laid thicker, around 22 to 40 mm, and can last well over twenty years. A sprayed bitumen seal is thinner, around 10 to 20 mm, with a shorter life of roughly five to ten years. For hard-wearing surfaces such as roads and busy areas, asphalt is the more durable investment.
Grip and noise. Asphalt is smoother and offers good skid resistance, which is why it is used on highways and busy roads. A bitumen seal has more surface texture, which gives grip but a slightly noisier ride, so it suits slower traffic and paths.
Temperature. Asphalt copes better with temperature swings. A sprayed bitumen surface is more sensitive to extreme heat, which can soften it, so our summers are worth factoring in when you choose.
Cost. Bitumen sealing is cheaper to lay, often around half the cost of a full asphalt surface, which makes it attractive for larger or lower-traffic areas. Asphalt costs more up front but asks for less frequent attention, so over a busy surface it can work out better value.
Which one suits your job
- Bitumen spray seal for long rural driveways, larger areas, and lower-traffic surfaces where the cost of covering a big area matters most.
- Asphalt for tighter suburban driveways, car parks and busy roads where you want a smooth, hard-wearing finish.
Neither is simply better. The right choice depends on the traffic, the area, the budget and the site. And whichever you pick, the surface only lasts if the base underneath is prepared, graded to drain, and compacted properly.
