What does an asphalt driveway cost?
There is no single price, because it depends on the size, the state of the ground, access and how much base work is needed. As a broad market guide, asphalt driveways in Australia often fall somewhere around $25 to $45 per square metre for a typical residential job. Treat that as general industry context, not a Road Ways quote. The only real number is the one we put in writing after we have seen your site, and that quote is free.
What is asphalt?
Asphalt is a mix of stone aggregate with filler and a bitumen binder. It is durable and flexible, which is why it is used for roads, driveways, car parks, pathways, courts and runways. Laid hot and rolled, it cools into a dense surface that copes well with the constant flex of traffic.
How long does it take to install?
Most residential driveways are laid and set within about one to three days, depending on the size and how much preparation the site needs. The base work is often the part that takes the time, and it is the part worth not rushing.
What are the benefits of an asphalt driveway?
Compared with gravel, pavers or concrete, asphalt is affordable, hard-wearing and quick to lay. It gives a smooth, tidy finish, cures faster than many alternatives, copes with all weather when the drainage is right, and is easy to look after. Repairs also blend in well, so it ages gracefully.
What is the process to install one?

In broad terms the job runs: check any council requirements for your area, set the fall so water drains away, excavate and build a compacted base to the right depth, then lay and compact the asphalt on top. How do I maintain and care for it?
Keep it clean, patch any cracks before water gets into the base, and reseal the surface every few years. That is most of the job. Avoid parking heavy vehicles in the same spot for long stretches, especially on hot days when fresh asphalt is soft.
How long does an asphalt driveway last?
Looked after, an asphalt driveway can last around 15 to 20 years or more before it needs major work. Good drainage and the occasional reseal are what get you to the longer end of that range.
Do I need to seal it, and how often?
Sealing helps protect the surface from moisture, UV and oil stains, and refreshes the colour. As a rough guide, every two to five years depending on how much use it gets and the climate. We are happy to talk through resealing options for your driveway when the time comes.
Can heavy vehicles damage it?

Are there environmental considerations?
