What spray sealing is
Spray sealing sprays a bitumen binder onto a prepared surface, then covers it with a layer of aggregate that locks in to form a new wearing surface. It is the same technique that seals a huge amount of Australia's road network, because it does three things well at once: it waterproofs the surface, it improves grip, and it goes down fast over a big area.
On a single home driveway we usually talk about it as a bitumen driveway. This page is about the larger end of the same craft: roads, lanes, yards and maintenance jobs where speed and cost per square metre really matter.

Spray seal or asphalt, which do I need?
It comes down to the area and the traffic. Spray seal is faster and better value per square metre over large areas, rural roads and long drives. Asphalt gives a smoother, denser finish that suits suburban driveways and the busiest surfaces. We are happy to look at your job and tell you which one earns its place rather than push one.
Which surfaces suit spray sealing?
Most of them, from highways and rural roads to urban streets, car parks and driveways. It is especially good value on a pavement that has started to show surface wear but is still structurally sound underneath.
How long does a spray seal last?
It depends on traffic, weather and maintenance, but a spray seal typically adds several years of life to a surface. Kept clean and resealed occasionally, it keeps going well past that.
Does it cope with heavy traffic?
Yes. Spray seals carry heavy traffic on roads every day. For the very busiest areas we may recommend a two coat seal or an asphalt surface instead, and we will say so up front rather than seal something that will not hold up.
Does the weather matter?
It does. A spray seal cures best in the right conditions, so we schedule the work around the weather to get a proper result rather than rushing it in the wet.
