Waterproof & hard-wearing
2 coat seals in South East Queensland
A two coat seal lays down two layers of binder and aggregate instead of one, giving you a tighter, tougher, properly waterproof surface. It is a great fit for driveways, lighter-traffic roads and anywhere the road base needs sealing well.
What a 2 coat seal is
A single spray seal is one pass of bitumen binder with aggregate rolled in. A two coat seal does it twice, with the second coat using a different aggregate size to key into the first. Those two layers knit together into a denser, tighter surface than a single seal, with fewer gaps for water to find.
That extra layer does two useful things. It stands up better to lighter vehicle traffic, including dual-cab utes and the like, and it forms a genuine waterproof skin over the road base. The base and any concrete or asphalt do the structural work, and the seal on top keeps water out of the base it relies on. That is where the name comes from.
When a 2 coat seal is the right call
- Driveways and access ways that want a tougher, longer-lasting seal than a single coat.
- Lighter-traffic roads, lanes and rural surfaces.
- Sites where waterproofing the road base is the priority, so it does not soften and fail from below.
- Surfaces that need a durable finish without the cost of a fully paved asphalt surface.
How we work
Our approach to a 2 coat seal
Understand the job
We look at the surface, the traffic it carries and how water sits on it, and quote the seal that suits, in writing.
Prepare the base
We make sure the base is sound, shaped and compacted, and set the fall so water runs off the finished seal.
Seal in two coats
We spray and roll the first coat, then follow with the second, timing each so the layers lock together properly.
Two coat seal or something else?
A two coat seal is a step up from a single spray seal and a value-focused alternative to a fully paved surface. If you want the smoothest possible finish, a hot mix asphalt driveway is the better fit. When you are not sure which way to go, that is exactly what the site visit is for. We will tell you honestly what suits the job.
Where we lay 2 coat seals
We lay two coat seals across South East Queensland, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Ipswich and Toowoomba. Tell us what you are sealing and we will work out the right approach.

On the job
Two layers, built to take traffic
A 2 coat seal puts down two passes of binder and aggregate: the first seals and strengthens, the second adds texture and grip. It is a tough, economical surface for drives and access roads.
Common questions
2 coat seal questions, answered
What is the difference between a single seal and a 2 coat seal?
A single spray seal is one pass of bitumen binder with aggregate rolled in. A two coat seal does it twice, with the second coat using a different aggregate size that keys into the first. The two layers knit together into a denser, tighter, more waterproof surface that stands up to more traffic.
Is a 2 coat seal waterproof?
It forms a genuine waterproof skin over the road base, which is one of its main jobs. The base does the structural work and the seal on top keeps water out of it, so the base does not soften and fail from below. That is where the surface earns its keep.
How long does a 2 coat seal last?
Well laid and looked after, a two coat seal generally runs around ten to fifteen years before the top loses its texture and grip. Resealing on time brings the grip and protection back, and it is far cheaper than letting the base fail and rebuilding from the ground up.
What maintenance does a 2 coat seal need?
Not much. Walk it a couple of times a year, fill any cracks before water works into the base, keep drains and vegetation clear at the edges, and plan a reseal when the surface starts to smooth out. Small fixes on time cost a fraction of a resurface later.
Can a 2 coat seal handle vehicle traffic?
Yes. It stands up well to lighter vehicle traffic, including dual-cab utes and the like, which is a step up from a single seal. For surfaces carrying constant heavy loads we will spec accordingly or talk you through hot mix asphalt instead.
How much does a 2 coat seal cost?
It depends on the area, the state of the base and access for our gear, so there is no honest single figure to list here. We come out, work out the right seal for the job and put a fixed price in writing for free.
