Bitumen driveways in South East Queensland

A bitumen spray seal gives you a tough, low-fuss driveway for a lot less than a fully paved surface. It is the smart call on longer drives, rural blocks and anywhere you want durable coverage over a big area.

What a bitumen driveway actually is

A bitumen driveway is built by spraying hot bitumen binder onto a prepared base, then rolling a layer of stone aggregate into it. The stone locks into the binder and forms the surface you drive on. Most people call this a spray seal, and it is the same method used to seal a lot of rural and back roads, which tells you plenty about how well it copes with traffic and weather.

It is often talked about as the budget alternative to asphalt, and for the right job it is. The difference is the finish: a spray seal has a slightly coarser, chip-sealed look, where asphalt is smoother and denser. Neither is better across the board. It comes down to the driveway and what you want from it.

When bitumen is the right choice

Bitumen is hard to beat when you are covering a lot of ground and want good value. It suits:

  • Long driveways and rural access, where the area makes a fully paved surface expensive.
  • Acreage and semi-rural blocks that need a durable, all-weather surface over gravel or dirt.
  • Properties where you want to seal the base, keep the dust down and stop it washing out in the wet.
  • A finish that flexes with the ground and shrugs off the Queensland heat.

If you want the smoothest possible surface right up to the house, we will usually talk you through asphalt for that section instead. Often the best answer is a mix, and we are happy to say so.

How we work

Our approach to a bitumen driveway

Where we lay bitumen driveways

We seal driveways for homes and businesses across South East Queensland, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Ipswich and Toowoomba. A lot of our bitumen work is on the bigger blocks around the fringes, so if you are on acreage, you are exactly who this suits.

On the job

Bitumen sprayed, then aggregate locked in

A spray seal is hot bitumen laid over a compacted base and covered with aggregate that is rolled in. On a longer rural drive it is a hard-wearing, cost-effective finish.

Common questions

Bitumen driveway questions, answered

How long does a bitumen driveway last?

Looked after, a bitumen spray seal can last many years, often up to around twenty, before it needs resealing. The big variables are traffic, drainage and whether it gets the occasional reseal. Fix small problems early and you get a lot more life out of it.

Bitumen or asphalt, which should I choose?

It comes down to the driveway. Bitumen spray seal is the value pick for longer and rural drives where you are covering a lot of ground; asphalt is smoother and denser, better up close to the house. Often the best answer is a mix of the two, and we will tell you honestly which suits your block rather than push one.

Can a bitumen driveway handle heavy vehicles?

Yes. Bitumen surfaces carry trucks on roads all day, so a home or commercial driveway is well within reach. For consistently heavy loads we spec the base and the seal to match, which is part of why we look at the site before quoting.

How do I keep a bitumen driveway in good shape?

Keep it clean, deal with any cracks before water gets underneath, and reseal it every few years. That is most of it. We can take care of the resealing when the time comes.

Will loose stone come off a new spray seal?

A little loose aggregate is normal for the first few weeks while the surface beds in. Driving slowly at first helps it settle, and once it has keyed into the binder it holds firm. We roll it in properly on the day to keep loose stone to a minimum.

How much does a bitumen driveway cost?

It depends on the area, the state of the base and access for our gear, so there is no honest single figure we could put here. We come out, measure it up and give you a fixed price in writing for free, with no pressure to go ahead.
