
Bitumen turns up in roads, car parks, roofs and sealing systems, but not all of it is the same. When the grade is not matched to the traffic, the climate and the way the surface moves, it breaks down fast: rutting, cracking, softening and failed waterproofing. Most of those problems trace back to the wrong grade being used in the first place. Here is a plain guide to how bitumen is classified and where each type belongs.
What bitumen actually is
Bitumen is a dense, dark material made mostly of hydrocarbons. Most of it comes from refining crude oil, though some occurs naturally in rock and sand deposits. Its sticky, waterproof nature is what makes it so useful across roads, roofing and insulation. Once refined, it is classified by how it behaves under heat, load and movement, and that behaviour defines its grade.
Natural versus refined
Natural bitumen, mined from tar sands and oil sands, is brittle and cracks easily without additives, so it tends to be limited to waterproofing and older insulation uses. Refined bitumen is distilled from crude oil to a consistent product, often with modifiers added to improve flexibility and adhesion. It handles a wider range of climates and loads, which is why it does most of the work in roads and infrastructure.
Penetration grades: how hard or soft
Penetration grading measures how soft the bitumen is at a set temperature.
- Hard grades resist deformation under pressure but can crack with temperature swings, so they suit waterproofing and insulation.
- Medium grades flex under vehicle load without cracking and cover most road and paving work.
- Soft grades give extra flexibility for high-density traffic zones.
Choose the wrong hardness for the load and you invite rutting, bleeding or surface fatigue.
Performance graded bitumen
Performance grading looks past hardness to how the material copes with real conditions: resistance to rutting, resistance to thermal cracking, and elastic recovery. Each grade carries two numbers for the highest and lowest temperatures it handles before deforming or cracking. Because it is chosen by function, it is the go-to for demanding surfaces like motorways, freight corridors, ports and loading docks.
Viscosity grades
Viscosity grading is about how the material flows at temperature, which matters most during application. Higher viscosity suits sealing and linings; medium viscosity is common in road surfacing; lower viscosity is used in spray seal work and priming. Matching flow to the climate and mix temperature is what avoids binder separation and patchy coverage.
Specialised types
Modern work also uses engineered forms: cutback bitumen (thinned with a solvent for priming and prep), emulsified bitumen (mixed with water for chip sealing and slurry work), and polymer-modified bitumen (mixed with polymers for elasticity in high-stress and roofing applications).
