Asphalt is a workhorse: durable, affordable and easy to lay. What people often miss is that it does not have to be plain black. There is a real range of finishes that lift the look of a driveway without giving up the toughness that makes asphalt worth choosing. Here are the options worth knowing about.
Traditional finishes
Standard asphalt. The classic smooth, uniform black surface. Clean, understated and versatile, it suits almost any style of home and is the most economical finish.
Exposed aggregate. By exposing the natural stone within the mix, this finish adds texture and depth, and it pairs especially well with stone or brick homes. As a bonus, the rougher surface improves grip, which is handy on a sloped or wet driveway.
Modern finishes
Stamped asphalt. Pressed while warm to mimic pavers or natural stone, stamped asphalt gives a high-end look at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. Patterns and colours can be tailored to suit the house.
Coloured asphalt. Colour opens up the design. Earthy tones to blend with the landscape or bolder shades to make a statement, colour lets the driveway complement the home rather than just sit in front of it.
Speciality finishes
Textured asphalt. Added texture improves both looks and safety, giving better traction for vehicles and people. It suits sloped driveways and areas that see a lot of rain.
Permeable asphalt. For those wanting a greener option, permeable asphalt lets water drain through the surface rather than run off. It reduces stormwater runoff and the risk of pooling, and helps recharge groundwater.
The finish is only half the job
Whichever finish you choose, the result only lasts if the work underneath is done properly. A sound, compacted base graded to drain, correct thickness, and regular sealing down the track are what keep the surface looking good and performing for years. A beautiful finish over a poor base will still fail, so we spend our time getting the foundation right first.
