Your driveway takes a beating from sun, rain and daily traffic, and over time damage creeps in. Left alone, a small crack turns into a big one, and a big one turns into a pothole. The good news is that most damage can be dealt with if you catch it and match the right fix to the problem. Here is how to think it through.
Start by assessing the damage
Before anything else, work out how bad it really is. Are you looking at a few hairline cracks, or are there potholes, sinking patches and cracking across the whole surface? Hairline cracks look harmless but let water in, which makes everything worse. Potholes are an immediate hazard for cars and feet. The type and spread of the damage points you to the right response.
Repairing minor cracks
Isolated, narrow cracks can often be sealed with a crack filler after a good clean-out. It is a simple job and well worth doing early, because sealed cracks keep water out of the base. If cracks are wide, active or spreading, it is worth having them looked at properly so the underlying cause gets addressed rather than just skinned over.
Filling potholes
Potholes form when water gets into the surface and undermines the base. A small one can be patched, but a larger pothole needs the damaged material cut out, the area cleaned, and fresh asphalt or bitumen laid and compacted so the repair blends in and holds. Patch it properly or it will come back.
Resurfacing for widespread wear
If the surface is tired across the board, faded, rough and cracking, but the base underneath is still sound, resurfacing is often the answer. We lay a fresh layer over the prepared existing surface, which restores the look and strength for a fraction of the cost of a full rebuild. Our driveway construction and resurfacing work covers exactly this.
When replacement is the honest call
Sometimes the damage runs deeper than the surface. Large sunken areas, cracking in a crocodile-skin pattern, or persistent drainage failure usually mean the base has gone. Laying new material over a failed base just wastes money, because the same problems return. In those cases a full replacement, base and all, is the durable fix.
Prevention beats repair every time
Keep the surface clean of oil, chemicals and debris, deal with small cracks as they appear, and reseal every few years. That simple routine adds years to a driveway and heads off the expensive repairs.
