Your driveway is often the first thing people notice about your home, so the material you choose matters for both looks and longevity. The three usual options are concrete, pavers and asphalt. Each does the job well; they just suit different priorities. Here is a plain comparison to help you decide.
The three materials in short
- Concrete is a mix of water, aggregate and cement. It is strong, can be shaped and finished in different ways, and is relatively straightforward to lay.
- Pavers are individual units of brick, stone, clay or concrete, laid in a pattern. They are hard-wearing and, laid well, flex without cracking.
- Asphalt is aggregate bound with bitumen, rolled out hot. It is durable, cost-effective, and simple and cheap to repair.
Cost
Asphalt is usually the most affordable to install, which makes it the go-to when budget is the main concern. Concrete costs more up front. Pavers are typically the dearest of the three because of the labour in laying them. The catch is upkeep: asphalt asks for resealing over its life, while pavers need little once they are down.
Durability
All three last well when they are installed properly. Asphalt gives you a good twenty years or so and is easy to renew a layer at a time. Concrete can last longer again but is harder to repair neatly when it does crack. Well-laid pavers are the most forgiving of ground movement, because individual units can be lifted and reset.
Climate
This is where our conditions come in. In real heat, asphalt softens a little and needs a binder grade suited to the local temperatures, which is exactly what we specify for South East Queensland. Good drainage and correct fall matter more than the headline material choice, because standing water is what shortens the life of any driveway here.
Looks
Pavers offer the widest range of colours, sizes and patterns, so they win on pure design flexibility. Concrete can be coloured and finished in several ways. Asphalt keeps a clean, classic dark look with fewer decorative options, though coloured and stamped finishes are possible if you want them.
