Asphalt or concrete? It is one of the first questions people ask when they are putting in a new driveway, and there is no single right answer. Both are proven surfaces. The better choice comes down to your budget, the look you are after, and the conditions on your block. Here is how they stack up.
Durability and upkeep
Concrete is hard-wearing and can last a very long time when it is poured and cured properly. It shrugs off UV and heavy loads well. Its weakness is that when it does crack, it is difficult and expensive to fix invisibly.
Asphalt is more flexible. It moves with ground shifting rather than cracking rigidly, which suits the reactive soils and heat we get across South East Queensland. It does ask for a bit more attention over its life, mainly resealing every few years, but repairs are quick and you usually only need to renew the top layer rather than the whole slab.
Looks
Concrete gives you more finishing options: exposed aggregate, colours, and stamped patterns, and it can be shaped around curves. Asphalt has a cleaner, more classic dark finish with fewer decorative options, though the smooth black look sits well against most homes and blends into the landscape.
Cost
Asphalt is generally cheaper to lay than concrete up front, which is often the deciding factor. Concrete costs more at the start but asks little of you afterwards. The right way to compare them is over the whole life of the driveway, not just the day it goes down: factor in resealing, likely repairs, and how long you expect the surface to last.
Weather and site conditions
This is where local knowledge earns its keep. Our long hot summers, heavy downpours and shifting clay soils all favour a surface that can flex and drain. Asphalt handles that movement well, and getting the fall right so water runs off quickly matters more here than the material choice on its own.
So which one?
If you want a lower up-front cost, a quick installation and a surface that copes with ground movement, asphalt is hard to beat. If you want maximum decorative choice and are happy to pay more at the start, concrete has its place. Either way, the surface only performs if the base under it is prepared and graded properly, and that is the part we never rush.
