Your driveway is one of the first things a visitor sees, and it is doing real work every day carrying vehicles in and out. A bit of regular care keeps it strong, safe and tidy, and it puts off the day you need a much bigger repair. Here are six things that make a genuine difference.
1. Go easy on heavy loads
Driveways are built for cars, not for parking a loaded truck or a skip bin on the same spot for weeks. Concentrated weight, especially near the edges, chips and deforms the surface. During a home renovation, keep heavy vehicles and materials off the driveway or spread the load.
2. Deal with cracks early
Water is the number one cause of driveway damage. It gets into a hairline crack, works into the base, and the crack spreads and deepens. Fill small cracks while they are small. Shop crack fillers are a short-term fix; a proper hot-applied sealant that bonds into the crack walls lasts much longer. If the cracking is widespread, get it looked at before it turns into a resurface.
3. Skip the sharp tools
When you are clearing weeds or scraping the surface, avoid metal edges and sharp implements that gouge the seal. Once you break the surface, you have given water a way in.
4. Seal it for protection
A sealcoat is a thin protective layer over the top that shields the surface from UV, water and oil. On a Queensland driveway that copes with hard sun and heavy summer rain, resealing every few years is one of the cheapest ways to add years to the life of the surface.
5. Keep an eye out during any works
If you are renovating or landscaping, have the driveway checked while the trades are on site. A professional will spot early problems, poor drainage, soft spots or fading, before they become expensive.
6. Keep it clean
Sweep off leaves, dirt and debris, and hose down oil and fuel spills promptly. Debris traps moisture against the surface and oil breaks down the binder. A clean driveway drains better, lasts longer and simply looks after itself more easily.
